Signs and symptoms of Internal Bleeding

Posted on

Internal bleeding is bleeding that happens inside of your body and is one of the most consequences of trauma. When you have an injury that damages the outside of your body, it is clearly is easy to see. A cut or tear in your skin usually leads to bleeding. You can see what’s hurt, where the injury is, and it’s easy to figure what caused it. Internal bleeding is not easy to see or diagnose.

Internal bleeding is often the outcome of trauma or an injury. There are also less noticeable causes of internal bleeding, including gastritis, organ damage, or a bleeding disorder. In some cases, the bleeding internally could be a sign of a person having a life-threatening condition. There are some symptoms of internal bleeding, including:

  • Dizziness
  • Severe weakness
  • Low blood pressure
  • Acute visual problems
  • Loss of balance
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of consciousness

You may also notice bloody or dark vomit or stool. Occasionally, there will be bleeding behind the internal organs in the abdomen and you can see bruising around your navel or on the sides of your abdomen.

Diagnosing an internal bleed usually requires medical tests and a physical exam and one of the most important conditions to get diagnosed after a car accident. Internal bleeding can get severe and if left untreated, can lead to organ failure, coma, and in some cases death. Unfortunately, even with treatment, severe internal bleeding can result in death.

So, this is why it is important to find and treat the cause of internal bleeding. If internal bleeding is caught and treated properly, the outlook on recovery is positive. Additional treatments may be needed to avoid any future bleeds, but there will be few lasting effects remaining.
